Sustainable Development
Building on the shire's natural strengths, Dungog has established a reputation for itself as a leader in the growth industry of sustainable development.
Dungog Shire Council has made a commitment to leading by example and is actively encouraging sustainable development in the area. Council has recently undertaken a series of innovative projects, which put it at the forefront of this exciting new industry. Examples include:
The implementation of a Sustainable Industries Project to create growth and employment opportunities based around developing sustainable industries, particularly renewable energy, farm forestry and recycled timber furniture manufacturing.
Council sourcing 50% of its electricity needs from renewable 'Green Power' through energy retailer NorthPower.
The implementation of an energy audit to reduce Council's own operating costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Many opportunities exist to build on this growing industry.
“For me Dungog shire is an ideal location to grow my recycled timber furniture business. With access to high quality timber, close proximity to my markets, a growing tourism industry and a supportive Council and business network, everything is in place. Sustainable development is the future for me and for the shire”
